Ives, Frederick Eugene (1856–1937) inventor; born in Litchfield, Conn. He served a printing apprenticeship (1870–73) and then headed the photographic laboratory at Cornell University (1875–79). He invented (1878) and improved (1885) the half-tone process in photography. He turned his attention to color photography and printing after 1890 and pioneered natural colors for motion pictures after 1912.
