Ivo Veloso da Silveira, Pedro 

Born 1811; died 1851. A captain in the Brazilian Army, one of the leaders of the republican-democratic movement in Brazil in 1848–49 (praieiros).

Ivo Veloso da Silveira was influenced by Utopian socialism; he fought against the monarchy and Negro slavery and dreamed of a republic of “social solidarity.” He showed singular abilities and great courage in the armed struggle against reaction. Imprisoned for taking part in an uprising, he died in an attempt to escape.
