Vojnović, Ivo
Born Oct. 9, 1857, in Dubrovnik; died Aug. 30, 1929, in Belgrade. Croatian writer. Vojnović was born into an aristocratic family. He graduated from law school in Zagreb in 1880 and began to publish during the 1880’s. In the years 1907-11 he was the literary director of a theater in Zagreb. Vojnovic’s best dramas are Storm of the Equinox (1895), drawn from the life of Dalmatian fishermen, and The Dubrovnik Trilogy (1902), which showed the decay of the Dubrovnik aristocracy. Vojnovic’s creative work is permeated with ideas for unifying the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. The realism of Vojnovic contains some elements of symbolism and expressionism. In the plays written from 1910 through the 1920’s religious motifs predominate. WORKSSabrana dela, vols. 1-3. Belgrade, 1939-41.In Russian translation: Buria ravnodenstviia (Ekvinotstsio).
