Ivrea

Ivrea (ēvrĕ`ä), city (1991 pop. 24,704), Piedmont, NW Italy, on the Dora Baltea River. It is a commercial and industrial center, and it is the headquarters of Olivetti, an important Italian company. Manufactures include typewriters, computers, and textiles. A Roman town (Eporedia), it was later the capital of a Lombard duchy and then the seat of a marquisate. Berengar II Berengar II , d. 966, marquis of Ivrea. In 950 he made himself and his son joint kings of Italy, but his great unpopularity and his attempt to force Adelaide, his predecessor's widow, to marry his son, brought the intervention (951) of Otto I of Germany.

, one of its rulers, was briefly king of Italy (mid-10th cent.). Ivrea passed to the house of Savoy in the 14th cent. The city is dominated by a picturesque castle (14th cent.), which has four red brick towers.
