Izmail’skii, Vsevolod Aleksandrovich 

Born Nov. 27 (Dec. 9), 1885, in Vilnius; died Sept. 17, 1973, in Moscow. Soviet organic chemist. Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1947), doctor of chemistry (1938), professor (1920).

Izmail’skii graduated from the Dresden Higher Technical School in 1911 and from the University of Petrograd in 1917. His works deal mostly with the chemistry of dyes and their intermediates, the synthesis of medicinal preparations, the electronic structure of organic compounds, and absorption spectra. He worked in scientific research institutes and taught in higher educational institutions in Moscow. He organized the manufacture of benzidine by a new method and synthesized Bismoverol and camphor V.I. Between 1913 and 1919 he worked on the connection between color in organic compounds and “intermediate structure.” He put forward a new classification of chromophoric groups based on their electronic structure (1939).
