In north-central TX, northwest of Fort Worth; organized July 4, 1857 from Cooke County. Name Origin: For the Jack brothers, William Houston (1806-44) and Patrick Churchill (1808-44), both TX statesman and legislators.

Area (sq mi): 920.11 (land 916.61; water 3.50). Pop per sq mi: 9.90.
Pop 2005: 9,064. State rank: 174. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.40%; 1990-2000 25.50%. Pop 2000: 8,763 (White 85.20%; Black or African American 5.50%; Hispanic or Latino 7.90%; Asian 0.30%; Other 5.50%). Foreign born: 2.80%. Median age: 37.00.
Income 2000: per capita $15,210; median household $32,500; Pop below poverty level: 12.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,488-$19,453.
Unemployment 2004: 4.90%. Change from 2000: 1.70%. Median travel time to work: 28.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 37.20%.
