A staff or flagpole attached to the bow of a ship, or the end of a spar projecting from the bow.

The flag's use at sea probably resulted in the word "Jack" being added to the name Union flag, because it was usually flown at the bow end of the ship, from what was known as the jack staff.
We created a team-building spirit that made the Black Jack staff a rewarding place to work.
We should only refer to a Union Jack when talking about a flag hung from the jack staff of a ship.
