Jackson, Abraham Valentine Williams, 1862–1937, American Orientalist, b. New York City. Teaching at Columbia Univ. (1895–1935), he was a great authority on ancient Persian religion, language, and literature as well as on modern Parsis Parsis or Parsees , religious community of India, practicing Zoroastrianism. The Parsis (numbering about 75,000) are concentrated in Maharashtra and Gujarat states, especially in Mumbai. Their ancestors migrated from Iran in the 8th cent.
