jaeger

(yā`gər), common name for several members of the family Stercorariidae, member of a family of hawklike sea birds closely related to the gull and the tern. The skua is also a member of this family. Jaegers and skuas are stocky, powerfully muscled birds with long, pointed wings, long tails, strong, hooked bills, and sharp, curved talons. They are tireless, wide-ranging flyers of the open seas. Their piratical habits give them the names robber gull and sea hawk. Jaegers and skuas rob the food of their smaller relatives, teasing and harassing them until they drop their prey. They also feed on the eggs of colonial sea birds, especially those of penguins. The skua (Catharacta skua) is the largest and darkest of the family, a denizen of the N Atlantic, though it breeds south to the antarctic. Of the three jaegers (Stercorarius species), all of northern oceans, the largest is the pomarine jaeger (also called jiddy hawk), the most common the parasitic jaeger, and the most graceful the long-tailed jaeger. All these birds are mostly blackish-brown above and white below, with a gilding of the head and neck in the older birds. Jaegers are classified in the phylum ChordataChordata
, phylum of animals having a notochord, or dorsal stiffening rod, as the chief internal skeletal support at some stage of their development. Most chordates are vertebrates (animals with backbones), but the phylum also includes some small marine invertebrate animals.

Long-tailed Jaegers are known to produce a second clutch, if the first nest suffers predation early on (Wiley and Lee 1998), which might suggest they are able to produce four eggs for a nest.
As mentioned above, there are clear indications from Greenland and Scandinavia that Long-tailed Jaegers respond numerically to densities of rodent populations.
Such information would allow us to explore the factors giving rise to such unusually large clutches among jaegers and skuas.

Whoever buys the 700-megahertz spectrum overlapping Alltel is going to have one less reason to buy Alltel, because then they could over-build Alltel with more efficient spectrum," Jaegers said.
If Alltel doesn't succeed in selling itself before the auction, Jaegers said, it would likely have to invest billions in bidding for the 700-megahertz spectrum.
Months passed, then one night the kidnapper called the Jaeger home, spoke briefly to their son, and again talked about a ransom.
The film manages to do a lot of things that work together to strengthen its focus on the real stars -- the Jaegers and the Kaiju.
Like all other 4-H members, Jaeger has to care for, feed and train her animal.
After his first phone session with Jaeger, Tomko had an epiphany.
A former Pierce College and Cal State Northridge relief pitcher in the mid-'80s who grew up in the Valley, as an all-league third baseman at Granada Hills High and had his own visions of glory, Jaeger began studying psychology while at CSUN and once sought out his own sports psychologist to help him deal with his own mental disharmony.
That led Jaeger on a self-conditioning journey that included Zen, Aikido, Tai Chi and Yoga.
