Jagati

poetic meters in Sanskrit versification. Jagati are defined by the number of matrachandas, or morae, in a line. Metrical versification developed under the influence of folk poetry; jagati were used in classical Sanskrit poetry along with the ancient syllabic versification, the vritti, which was inherited from the Vedic era. In neo-Indic literatures, accentual meters are supplanting the jagati. Of the jagati meters in Sanskrit literature, the most widely used are the vaitaliya, a quatrain with 14 morae in the first and third lines and with 16 morae in the second and fourth, and the arya, 71/2 feet (gana)of four morae in the first couplet (12 + 18) and three less morae in the second (12 + 15).
