Jakko Juteini

    0.02 sec.
Juteini, Jakko

Born July 14, 1781, in Hattula; died June 20, 1855, in Viipuri (Vyborg). Finnish poet and Enlightenment figure. Wrote in Swedish and Finnish.

Juteini’s philosophical, anticlerical work Reflections on Various Themes (1827) was publicly burned. He opposed discrimination against the Finnish language in the poem “List on a Pillory for Finnish Scholars” (1817) and in the foreword to A Grammar of the Finnish Language (1818). In the play A Family (1817) and in various poems he defended the oppressed Finnish peasantry. Juteini was the author of the antireligious satirical play A Joke About Evil Spirits (1817). Many of Juteini’s poems have become folk songs.
