Jalea, Ion

Born May 19, 1887, in the village of Casimcea, Tulcea District. Rumanian sculptor. People’s Artist of the Socialist Republic of Rumania and member of the Rumanian Academy.

Jalea studied at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest (from 1907 to 1911), at the Julian Academy (in 1915 and 1916), and at E. A. Bourdelle’s studio in Paris. He creates clearly defined figures that are often subtle in their psychological portrayals (The Shepherd, plaster, 1938; the statue of G. Enesco, plaster, 1958, in the Rumanian Museum of Art in Bucharest) and monumental decorative sculptures, whose overall style is emphasized by their powerful proportions (The Archer at Rest, stone, 1926, park in Constanja). He was elected president of the Artists’ Union of Rumania in 1968.
