Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri (jəlpī`grē), town (1991 pop. 68,732), West Bengal state, NE India, on the Tista River. It is the administrative center for a district that produces tea, rice, jute, tobacco, timber, and medicinal herbs; it is West Bengal's primary agricultural market. It is on major road and rail lines. Sawmilling and jute-pressing are major industries.

A STUDENT of Jalpaiguri Polytechnic College committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in Burdwan district on Monday.
