James, Daniel, Jr. (“Chappie”) (1920–78) aviator; born in Pensacola, Fla. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a fighter pilot and instructor. He saw combat in Korea and Vietnam, headed the North American Air Defense Command (1975–78), and became the first African-American to attain four stars in the U.S. military.
