Established: Authorized on December 28, 1980; established on July 15, 1996. Site is managed cooperatively by the Western Historical Society and the National Park Service. Location: In Mentor, Ohio, just northeast of Cleveland. From I-90 (east of Cleveland) take the SR 306 Mentor/Kirtland Exit. Travel north on SR 306, 2 miles to Mentor Ave. (US 20), then east 2 miles. Facilities: Visitor center, museum/exhibit. Activities: Guided tour. Special Features: This site preserves the family home and artifacts of the 20th US President. Named Lawnfield by reporters, it was the site of the first successful front porch campaign which saw Garfield elected President. Following his assassination, the Memorial Library wing was added by Mrs. Garfield and her family, setting the precedent for presidential libraries. See other parks in Ohio.
