In southeastern VA, on the east bank of James River; original county, organized 1634. Name Origin: For James I (1566-1625), king of England; also king of Scotland as James VI; son of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Pop 2005: 57,525. State rank: 31. Pop change: 2000-20005 19.60%; 1990-2000 38.00%. Pop 2000: 48,102 (White 81.00%; Black or African American 14.40%; Hispanic or Latino 1.70%; Asian 1.50%; Other 2.10%). Foreign born: 4.10%. Median age: 40.80.
