Japanese Deer

(Cernís nippon), an ungulate of the family Cervidae. The body length is 90–120 cm, the height at the shoulders is 85–118 cm, and the weight is 80–150 kg. The Japanese deer is a slender animal. The male has branching antlers, each with three or four tines. The winter coat is gray-brown, and the summer coat is a bright reddish yellow with numerous spots set in rows. The belly and the rump are white. Japanese deer are found in China, Korea, and Japan; in the USSR, they are found wild in small numbers in the Primor’e Krai. The animals have been stocked in several preserves and game farms. In the wild the deer live in small groups in the forest, feeding on grass and leaves. Japanese deer are raised in captivity for their antlers.
