Javari (zhəvərē`), Span. Yavarí, river, c.500 mi (805 km) long, rising in the Cerro de Canchyuaya, E Peru. It flows northeast, forming part of the boundary between Brazil and Peru, before entering the Amazon near Tabatinga. It is navigable for most of its length.

Javarí 

a river in South America, a right tributary of the Amazon. Except for its upper reaches, it is the border between Brazil and Peru. Length, 1,056 km. The river rises in Peru, in the foothills of the Peruvian Andes (the Montana), and it flows through the Amazon lowland. It is fed by rain. The high-water period is from December to April. The Javari is navigable for 500 km by small vessels.

Just days before the plane crash, according to indigenous rights protection group Survival International, FUNAI announced it would launch an expedition in November to search for uncontacted tribes in the Javari valley, where the Matis live.
