Jayapura or Djajapura (both: jä'yəpŭr`ə), formerly Sukarnapura (s kär'nəp r`ə), town, capital of Papua Papua (păp` ə, –y..... Click the link for more information. (Indonesian New Guinea), Indonesia. A regional trade center and seaport, it is on Yos Sudarso Bay (formerly Humboldt Bay; an inlet of the Pacific) near the border with Papua New Guinea. Occupied by the Japanese in World War II, it was liberated by U.S. forces in Apr., 1944, and served as General MacArthur's headquarters. Another former name was Hollandia.
