Jean, Prince, Grand Duke of Luxembourg
(full name, Jean Benoit Guillaume Marie-Robert Louis Antoine Adolphe Marc d’Aviano). Born Jan. 5, 1921, in Luxembourg. Statesman of Luxembourg, prince of the house of Bourbon Parma. In 1938, Prince Jean graduated from Ampleforth College in Yorkshire, Great Britain. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1939. On May 10, 1940, the day that Luxembourg was occupied by fascist Germany, he was abroad. In November 1942, as a protest against the drafting of Luxembourg youth into the Wehrmacht, Prince Jean joined the British armed forces. He saw combat duty near Arnhem in the Netherlands and took part in the offensive in northern Germany. Toward the end of World War II he was the liaison officer with the allied military mission in Luxembourg, and he holds the rank of colonel in the Luxembourg Army.
