Allemane, Jean

Born Aug. 25, 1843; died 1935. French petit bourgeois socialist. A printing worker, he participated in the worker’s movement from 1862.

During the Paris Commune of 1871, Allemane headed the council of one of the legions of the National Guard. After the defeat of the Commune he was exiled to New Caledonia at hard labor for life. Upon his return to France in 1880 after an amnesty, Allemane contributed to a series of socialist newspapers. In 1882 he joined the Possibilists, and in 1890 became head of a splinter group, the Workers’ Social Revolutionary Party, whose members were called Allemanists. He was elected to Parliament in 1901, 1906, and 1910. Defeated in the elections of 1914, Allemane retired from political activity.
