Tilho, Jean Auguste Marie 

Born Mar. 1, 1875, in Domme, Dordogne; died 1956 in Paris. French explorer of Africa. Member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1932).

Tilho saw military service in the French colonies beginning in 1895, at first on Madagascar and then in Senegal and Dahomey (Benin). From 1899 to 1902 he was the leader of an expedition to the middle section of the Niger. From 1902 to 1905 he served on a commission for the demarcation of borders between the British Niger Coast Protectorate and French West Africa. In 1908, Tilho carried out a topographical survey of Lake Chad and explored the Bodele depression. From 1912 to 1917 he explored the Tibesti Massif and the Ennedi Plateau. Tilho also discovered and explored the Erdi Plateau.
