the cgs unit of viscosity; the viscosity of a fluid in which a tangential force of 1 dyne per square centimetre maintains a difference in velocity of 1 centimetre per second between two parallel planes 1 centimetre apart. It is equivalent to 0.1 newton second per square metre.

the unit of dynamic viscosity in the centimeter-gram-second system. The poise is equal to the viscosity of a fluid offering a resistance of 1 dyne to the mutual displacement of two layers of fluid having an area of 1 cm2 separated by a distance of 1 cm and moving with a relative velocity of 1 cm/sec. The poise was named in honor of J. L. M. Poiseuille; its abbreviation in international usage is P. 1 P = 0.1 newton-sec/m2.
