Tricart, Jean-Léon-François 

Born Sept. 16, 1920, in Montmorency. French geologist and geomorphologist.

After graduating from the faculty of letters at the University of Paris, Tricart was an assistant lecturer at the university from 1945 to 1948. In 1947 he joined the staff of the Geological Survey of France. He became a professor in 1955 and the director of the Center of Applied Geography at the University of Strasbourg in 1957. In 1955 he became chairman of the Applied Geomorphol-ogy Commission of the International Geographical Union.

Tricart’s main works deal with structural and climatic geomor-phology, applied geomorphology, and the methods used in geo-morphology. He investigated the geologic structure of the Senegal River delta, the Middle Niger, and various river basins in Brazil and Venezuela and studied the water resources of Peru, Chile, and various river basins in France.

Tricart is the founder and editor of the Revue de géomorpholo-gie dynamique.
