Jellicoe, John Rushworth 

Born Dec. 5, 1859, in Southhampton; died Nov. 20, 1935, in London. Earl; English admiral of the fleet from 1919.

Jellicoe began his naval career in 1872. He graduated from the Naval College in 1884. He served in colonial wars against Egypt (1882) and China (1900). He became second sea lord in 1913. During World War I (1914-16) he was commander in chief of the Grand Fleet, which he led in the battle of Jutland (1916). From December 1916 until the end of 1917, he was first sea lord. The active warfare against German submarines was begun under his leadership. He became governor of New Zealand in 1920. In 1925 he retired.
