Jesus Faria

Faría, Jesus 

Born June 27, 1910, in Borojo, in the state of Falcon, Venezuela. Figure in the Venezuelan communist and working-class movements.

Born into a working-class family, Faria worked in the oil fields until 1944. He was an active member of the petroleum workers’ trade union and served as chairman of the union from 1944 to 1948. He joined the Communist Party of Venezuela (CPV) in 1935. In 1946 he became a member of the Central Committee of the CPV and of the Politburo of the Central Committee, and in April 1951, general secretary of the party. Faria served in the Congress as a senator in 1947–48 and again from 1958 to 1963. From 1968 to 1973 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies. For his part in the revolutionary struggle, Faria was imprisoned from 1950 to 1958 and from 1963 to 1966. Between 1966 and 1968 he lived abroad. Faria was vice president of the executive committee of the Latin American Confederation of Workers for several years.
