Jewel Cave National Monument

National monument, southwestern South Dakota, U.S. Established in 1908, it occupies an area of 2 sq mi (5 sq km). It is noted for its limestone caverns, a series of chambers joined by narrow passages. The known length of the caverns is 77 mi (124 km).

Size: 1,274 acres.
Established: Proclaimed on February 7, 1908; transferred from Forest Service on August 10, 1933.
Location: 13 miles west of Custer, South Dakota, on US 16 or 24 miles east of Newcastle, Wyoming, on US 16.
Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit.
Activities: Hiking, wildlife viewing, guided cave tours.
Special Features: With more than 136 miles surveyed, Jewel Cave is recognized as the second longest cave in the world. Its limestone caverns consist of a series of chambers connected by narrow passages, with many side galleries and fine calcite crystal encrustations. More and more of the cave is discovered by explorers each year.
