Jiaxing

Jiaxing (jyä`shĭng`) or Kashing (kä`shĭng`), city (1994 est. pop. 227,600), N Zhejiang prov., SE China, at the junction of the Grand Canal, the Huangpu River, and the Hangzhou-Shanghai RR. An important marketing center for rice and silk, it has textile mills, food-processing establishments, and cement plants. It also produces most of China's cigarette paper. The name sometimes appears as Chia-hsing.

The company signed a contract with Minfeng Special Paper in China to supply a seven-roll OptiLoad calender at its mill in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province.
Thus the late-nineteenth-century gazetteer for Jiaxing prefecture (in the lower Yangzi valley) tells us that in the seventh lunar month, "the busy month," "[people] plant wheat and beans, care for the mulberry trees, and build the threshing-floors, children and women working fiat out.
