Jipijapa

(hēpēhä`pä), city (1990 pop. 32,225), W Ecuador, on the equatorial lowlands. A few miles inland from the Pacific, Jipijapa is famous for the manufacture of high-grade Panama hats, made from the jipijapa plant. It is also the trade center for an agricultural region.

a city in western Ecuador, in Manabí Province, near the Pacific coast. Population, 19,000 (1972). Jipijapa, which is linked by highway with the city of Guayaquil, is the center of a coffee-producing region. Panama hats are made in the city.
