's staff during Pompidou's premiership. After Pompidou's election as president (1969), Jobert was his adviser on foreign affairs. A skillful negotiator, he helped bring about Great Britain's entry (1973) into the European Community (now the European Union). He was French foreign minister (Apr., 1973–May, 1974) and foreign trade minister (1981–83) in a Socialist-led government.
