Dreyer, Johan Ludvig Emil 

(also John Louis Dreyer). Born Feb. 13, 1852, in Copenhagen; died Sept. 14, 1926, in Oxford. Danish astronomer.

Beginning in 1874, Dreyer worked in Ireland, and from 1882 to 1916 he was director of the observatory in the city of Armagh. In 1923-24 he was president of the Royal Astronomical Society in England. He compiled a general catalog (NGC) of more than 13,000 nebulas and star clusters. He prepared and partially published the complete collected works of Tycho Brahe as well as his biography (1890); he also published works of W. Herschel. Dreyer was the author of a number of works on the history of astronomy.
