Eggert, John Emil Max

Born Aug. 1, 1891, in Berlin; died Sept. 29,1973, in Zürich. German physical chemist.

A student of W. Nernst’s, Eggert studied from 1909 to 1913 at the University of Berlin and the Technische Hochschule of Berlin. In 1913 he became a lecturer at the University of Berlin, and from 1923 to 1937 he was a professor there. From 1928 to 1945 he was head of the scientific laboratory of AGFA, and from 1946 to 1961 he was a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich.

Eggert’s main work dealt with the chemistry of photographic processes. He studied the photosensitivity of silver halides and determined the quantum yield of photochemical reactions in the halide crystals in emulsion layers. Eggert showed that the optical density of developed emulsion layers is dependent on the degree of dispersion of silver in the layers.
