John Gorrie Museum State Park Location: On 6th Street in Apalachicola, off US 98. Facilities: Museum. Activities: Interpretive exhibits. Special Features: John Gorrie was a young physician who served as Apalachicola's postmaster, city treasurer, town councilman, and bank director in the early 1800s. Concern for his yellow fever patients led Gorrie to develop a method for cooling their rooms. By inventing a machine that made ice, he became a pioneer in the field of air conditioning and refrigeration and in 1851 received the first US patent for mechanical refrigeration.
