Holt, John (Caldwell) (1923–85) educational reformer; born in New York City. A teacher turned writer and lecturer, his best-selling How Children Fail (1964, revised in 1982) and How Children Learn (1967, 1983) called for educational reform to nurture children's creativity. In the 1970s Holt became a leader in the home-schooling movement.
