Hutchinson, John

Born Apr. 7, 1884, in Wark on Tyne, Northumberland; died Sept. 2, 1972, in London. British botanist. Fellow of the Royal Society of London (1947).

Hutchinson worked at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew from 1904 to 1948. (He continued working there after retirement and until his death.) His principal works dealt with the flora of Africa and the phylogeny of flowering plants. In his phylogenetic system he developed the ideas of C. Bessey and H. Hallier. He proposed the division of primary dicotyledons into two lines— ligneous and herbaceous. His 12-volume The Genera of Flowering Plants remains unfinished.
