Born Apr. 7, 1884, in Wark on Tyne, Northumberland; died Sept. 2, 1972, in London. British botanist. Fellow of the Royal Society of London (1947).

His principal works dealt with the flora of Africa and the phylogeny of flowering plants. In his phylogenetic system he developed the ideas of C. Bessey and H. Hallier.
