Johnson, Sargent

Johnson, Sargent (Claude) (1888–1967) sculptor, printmaker; born in Boston, Mass. The son of a Swedish father and a mother of Cherokee and African-American ancestry, he was based in San Francisco, and, beginning in 1915, studied at the California School of Fine Arts. He worked in wood with lacquered and painted layers of gesso and linen, as in Forever Free (1933).
