Established: Established on August 15, 1978.
Location: The national recreation area comprises a series of parklands along a 48-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee River, north of Atlanta. Shuttle bus service is available among the sites.
Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor contact station, canoe and raft rental, boat ramp, hiking trails (50 miles), fitness trail with exercise stations, restaurant/snacks.
Activities: Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, fishing, horseback riding.
Special Features: The 540-mile Chattahoochee River flows southwesterly from the north Georgia mountains to its Flint River confluence at Lake Seminole. The portion of the river that comprises the national recreation area lies within four counties. In addition to providing recreational opportunities, it contains a wide variety of natural habitats, flora and fauna, 19th-century historic sites, and Native American archeological sites.
