In east-central NC, southeast of Raleigh; organized 1746 (prior to statehood) from Craven County. Name Origin: For Gabriel Johnston (1699-1752), colonial governor of NC (1734-52).

    In south-central OK, south of Ada; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Chickasaw lands. Name Origin: For Douglas H. Johnston (1856-1939), last governor for the Chickasaw nation, who remained in office until his death.
