Jones, Joseph

Jones, Joseph (1833–96) physician; born in Liberty County, Ga. He enlisted in the Confederate cavalry, but was transferred to the medical corps since he was a doctor. In 1872 he joined the faculty at the University of Louisiana and was elected to the State Board of Health (1880–84) where he worked to improve sanitary conditions in New Orleans. Throughout his life he studied diseases endemic to the American South and he wrote on a wide range of subjects.
