Jones, Sam Houston (1897–1978) governor, lawyer; born near Merryville, La. A World War I veteran, he practiced law in Beauregard Parish, La., serving as district attorney (1925–34). As Louisiana's governor (Dem., 1940–44), he cleaned up Huey Long's excesses, and instituted a civil service system that resulted in a 15 million dollar surplus.
