Joseph Bonaparte
a gulf of the Timor Sea on the northern coast of Australia, between the Arnhem Land and Kimberley peninsulas. Length, approximately 780 km; width, 1,280 km at the entrance; depth, up to 98 m. The shores are low-lying and notched with small bays and coves. The Daly, Victoria, and Ord are some of the rivers that empty into the gulf. The tides are semidiurnal and reach 8.4 m. Joseph Bonaparte Gulf was discovered in 1801 by the French captain N. Baudin on the ship Géographe, and was named after the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
