Joseph Jacques C?saire . 1852-- 1931, French marshal. He commanded the French army (1914--16) and was largely responsible for the Allies' victory at the Marne (1914), which halted the German advance on Paris

It leads off with a chronology that provides an easy reference for major events of the period, from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on 28 June 1914 to Gen Robert Nivelle's replacement of Gen Joseph Joffre as French commander in chief on 12 December 1916.
Gen Joseph Joffre was able to develop a counteroffensive attack against Gen Alexander von Kluck at the pivotal Battle of the Maine, partially because of air reconnaissance.
