On the southwestern border of OR, west of Jackson; organized Jan 22, 1856 from Jackson County. Name Origin: For either Josephine Rollins (1835-c.1911), daughter of the leader of a wagon train bound for California and first white woman to settle in the county, or for Josephine Creek, which was also named in her honor.
