Jourde, Francois

Jourde, François

Born July 4, 1843, in Chassant; died Mar. 20, 1893, in Nice. Member of the Paris Commune of 1871 (on the Finance Commission and the Executive Com-mission). An accountant by trade.

Jourde belonged to the Proudhonist “minority” in the Commune and defended the inviolability of capitalist private property. He fought courageously on the barricades May 21–28, 1871. After the defeat of the Commune he was sent to the prison colony of New Caledonia, from which he escaped in 1874. After the amnesty in 1880 he returned to France and joined the French Labor Party. Jourde wrote memoirs dealing with the Commune.
