Juba I, king of NumidiaJuba I (j `bə), c.85 B.C.–46 B.C., king of Numidia in N Africa. He joined Pompey's party and in 49 B.C. routed Caesar's legate, Curio. He fought on the side of Metellus Scipio Scipio , ancient Roman family of the Cornelian gens. They were patricians. During the 3d and 2d cent. Despite his defeat, his son, Juba II, d. c.A.D. 20, was educated in Rome and reinstated as king, probably first in Numidia, then in Mauretania (c.25 B.C.).
