Jabalpur (jŭb'əlpôr`), city (1991 pop. 888,916), Madhya Pradesh state, central India, on the Narmada River. It is a district administrative center and an important rail junction and military post. Manufactures include weapons, ammunition, processed foods, and wood products. Jabalpur Univ. is in the city.

Jabalpur 

a city in central India in the state of Madhya Pradesh on the Narmada River. Population, 533,800 (1971).

The city is a major transportation junction. Its industrial products include cotton, ceramics, rubber, food, and metal-work. Jabalpur was founded in the first half of the 19th century as a British military base. It is known for the religious sect of Thugs (stranglers).
