Juilliard, Augustus D. (1836–1919) businessman; born at sea to French immigrants. A wealthy New York cotton merchant, he bequeathed twenty million dollars to aid the development of music in the U.S.A. The resulting Juilliard Music Foundation established the Juilliard School of Music in New York (1905).
