Payer, Julius Von
Born Sept. 1, 1842, in Schönau, near Teplice; died Aug. 30, 1915, in Veldes, now Bled, Yugoslavia. Austrian arctic explorer. Together with K. Weyprecht, Payer led an arctic expedition aboard the Tegetthoff from 1872 to 1874. The mission led to the discovery of Franz Josef Land. Payer described the voyage in his book Seven Hundred and Twenty-five Days Amid Arctic Ice (1876; Russian translation, 1935). Want to thank TFD for its existence?
