In panhandle, southeastern AK on the Gastineau Channel, 90 mi. northeast of Sitka. State capital and largest city in the U.S. (by area). Founded 1880; designated to replace Sitka as capital in 1900, but the move to Juneau did not take place until 1906. Major industries: fishing, lumbering, tourism. Borough and city were consolidated in 1970; includes Douglas. Name Origin: For miner Joseph Juneau (1826-99), who discovered gold here in 1880. Formerly Harrisburg.
