State capital and largest city in the U.S. (by area). Founded 1880; designated to replace Sitka as capital in 1900, but the move to Juneau did not take place until 1906. Major industries: fishing, lumbering, tourism. Borough and city were consolidated in 1970; includes Douglas. Name Origin: For miner Joseph Juneau (1826-99), who discovered gold here in 1880. Formerly Harrisburg. Area (sq mi): 3255.01 (land 2716.67; water 538.34). Pop per sq mi: 11.40. Pop 2005: 30,987. State rank: 5. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.90%; 1990-2000 14.80%. Pop 2000: 30,711 (White 73.30%; Black or African American 0.80%; Hispanic or Latino 3.40%; Asian 4.70%; Other 19.80%). Foreign born: 5.70%. Median age: 35.30. Income 2000: per capita $26,719; median household $62,034; Pop below poverty level: 6.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $34,762-$36,668. Unemployment 2004: 6.00%. Change from 2000: 1.20%.
